It begins with rapport (which is another way of saying "fit").
It's the foundation of all relationships and especially important here. You want to feel like you jive with your counsellor. With a sense of trust, understanding and connection it becomes easier (or in many cases, the thing needed) to open up. When we share our thoughts, emotions and concerns more freely, we see more clearly.
The conversations that follow are intended offer you insight into your thoughts, feelings, behaviors and give you greater clarity on what you value and what you need. Sometimes this allows us to develop strategies or coping mechanisms to manage your difficulties. Sometimes this helps us name something that wants to be healed. Other times, what you've been carrying simply needs to be said and heard in a safe place.
Most counselling sessions are held online via video. This can be done with any device that has a camera, mic and internet connection. You will be sent a link to join your session and brought directly to your personal and private space. The ideal set up is in a quiet place you're comfortable. Earphones are often helpful.
